What was your first thought when you were crowned Miss Litchfield County?
When the MC announced my name it sounded like it was in slow motion, like each syllable was an echo in my head. I felt like I was stuck in my place and it came together and I walked over to the crowing chair. I remember hearing my mom in the crowd scream at the top of her lungs “oh my God! Kaitlin!” And I felt warm tears run down my face. I felt extremely accomplished and grateful to be crowned since I stopped competing when I was 17 and this was my first time back at 22 and my first win.
What do you hope to accomplish as Miss Litchfield County?
I hope to spread awareness about A Moment of Magic Foundation. I’ve been with them since the start, when it was just a campus club. Now it’s across America in various universities and colleges. This foundation means a lot for families since it brings back a crucial part to the pediatric healing process: Childhood Magic. I hope to promote more AMOM activity and awareness in CT. Please visit www.amomentofmagic.org to learn more about these college and pediatric hospital relationships and how they’re restoring the magic of childhood one hospital room at a time.
To you, why is Miss America still relevant?
How is Miss American not relevant? This entire program is about service, she serves the US as a whole community. Something many people forget. It’s fantastic to have your own identity within a smaller community or culture, but at the end of the day we’re also the USA as a whole, we are apart of this world as a whole. She brings in those bigger picture identities closer to home through her service.
What has been your favorite appearance thus far as Miss Litchfield County?
My favorite appearance was at HuskyTHON. It was a fundraiser where students, teachers, and community members through CT came together to fundraise on behalf of pediatric health. I loved seeing all the kids, familiar faces, and meeting new people in a place where we are together contributing to something we all care about. It’s that togetherness I admire being apart of.
What is your favorite quote?
“Porque mi alma es toda fantástica, viajera, y la envuelve una nube de locura ligera cuando la luna nueva sube al cielo azulino.” – Alfonsina Storni
English translation: “Because my soul is all fantastic, a traveler, and enveloped by a cloud of light madness when the new moon rises to the bluish sky”
Fun fact: I broke my collar bone on the old Mad Mouse roller coaster at Quassy Amusement Park when I was a kid.
Who would you like to thank for helping you get to this point?
I’d like to thank my significant other Samuel. He has been an enthusiastic supporter at every event and helping me prepare for the Miss CT competition in June. When things get a little hectic he’s always there to remind me of the strength and power that is within me.
